CHF is the inability of the heart to pump enough blood to the body.

  • CHF is the most common diagnosis in hospital patients greater than 65 years of age
  • Nearly 5 million people are living with CHF
  • Approximately 550,000 new cases diagnosed yearly
  • CHF is responsible for 11 million physician visits each year
  • More than half of those with CHF die within 5 years of being diagnosed


Risk Factors:

  • High cholesterol
  • Smoking (6 times more likely to be diagnosed with CHF)
  • Hypertension
  • Diabetes


Signs & Symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Palpitations
  • Decrease in ability to exercise
  • Swelling of feet and ankles
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Enlarged liver
  • Weight gain
